School of Public Health also ranks in top 5 in five new specialty rankings and #3 among Health Care Management programs

The University of Michigan School of Public Health has been ranked #5 in U.S. News and World Report’s list of Best Public Health Schools.

This year, U.S. News also issued inaugural rankings of five new specialty fields: biostatistics, environmental health science, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences. Michigan Public Health ranked in the top 5 in each specialty:

  • Biostatistics: #3
  • Environmental Health Science: #5
  • Epidemiology: #4
  • Health Policy and Management: #3
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: #5

“We are honored that our peers across the country recognize the high quality interdisciplinary research, training and engaged learning offered at Michigan Public Health,” said Dean F. DuBois Bowman of Michigan Public Health.

U.S. News rankings of accredited schools and programs of public health are based on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and faculty at accredited degree programs and schools of public health. Respondents are asked to rate the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding), and the schools with the highest average scores appear in the rankings.

Michigan Public Health is tied for #5 with the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the University of Washington School of Public Health. Last year, Michigan Public Health was ranked #6 overall. This year’s #5 ranking corresponds to a #2 ranking among public schools of public health.

“Rankings are just one measure of academic quality, and Michigan Public Health is committed to continued growth and improvement as we train future public health leaders and pursue creative solutions to dynamic public health challenges,” Bowman said.

Best Health Care Management Program Rankings

Rankings for health care management programs were also released by U.S. News today, with Michigan Public Health’s MHSA program ranked #3 in the nation. This designation is distinct from the new health policy and management specialty ranking and focuses on MHSA and MHA programs within schools of public health, medical schools, and other institutions. Rankings for Best Health Care Management Programs are also based on the results of peer assessment surveys.
