In 35 years at Michigan Public Health, Professor of Biostatistics Michael Boehnke has applied his lifelong love of math to groundbreaking research and teaching that inspires the next generation of public health professionals.
James Martin led a career spanning all the twists and turns of nuclear energy—weaponry to nuclear power and medicine. Within weeks of completing his undergraduate degree, Martin recalls, “I was chasing radioactive fallout clouds in Nevada.”
Whether it’s researching the connections between housing and health, going to city development conferences, or teaching students about healthy built environments, Roshanak Mehdipanah is committed to bridging the gap between public health and urban planning.
Caldwell is sometimes asked what parenting has to do with public health. “Everything,” she says. “Individual, family, and community health are all about relationships and social support—all of which are vital to the public’s health.”
As a teenager growing up in rural Iowa, John Meeker spent countless hours in the corn and soybean fields doing farm work to make money. “We would often be out ‘walking beans,’ where you go row by row through soy fields to kill weeds,” he says. He and his friends would receive an unmarked bottle of liquid and would either walk or ride a tractor as they sprayed.
