A variety of types of assistance are available to help you cover your costs—federal loans, work-study positions, scholarships, fellowships, graduate student instructorships, graduate student research assistantships, full-time and temporary employment, and private sources. Set up your University of Michigan uniqname and email account
Once you confirm your enrollment, you should receive an email invitation to set up your uniqname, which is your University of Michigan username. It is used for logging into U-M websites, email, and more. This is the first step to setting up your email account.
Once your University of Michigan email has been set up, it’s important to check it regularly, as we’ll be communicating important information about registration, orientation and more.
Once you set up your uniqname and email address, there are a couple additional steps you’ll want to take:
- Update your Campus Personal Information in Wolverine Access (under Student Business).
- Register your laptop with the University Police.
Review Additional Student Resources
- Academic Calendar for Online Degrees
- Resources for Students with Disabilities
- Residency Classification Guidelines
- Get your MCard
- The Mcard is your official University of Michigan identification card. Although online students don’t need an MCard for daily life on campus, it can be a useful resource to access student-centered discounts, provide easy identification of your student status, and, if you are on-or-near campus, enable you to access local transportation.
Get Set Up To Learn Online
- Set up your U-M email account and check it regularly.
- Set up your Coursera account. We recommend using your University email address. You can update the email address associated with your Coursera account at any time.

- Update your Campus Personal Information in Wolverine Access (under Student Business).
- Familiarize yourself with Zoom video conferencing, Slack team messaging, and the Coursera Online Education platform (we’ll practice these more during the Onboarding & Advising Course).
