Michigan Public Health alumnus Larry Brilliant, MPH ’77, a prominent philanthropist and epidemiologist who helped eradicate smallpox, described public health in a live conversation with Dean F. DuBois Bowman as “the most rewarding field in the world.” We think so, too. We also know that we must grow the pool of talented students interested in public health and outcompete other top-tier schools for their enrollment.
History has shown that public health is more responsive, agile and impactful when a broad spectrum of voices, experiences and expertise are represented in decision-making and planning, and when the public health workforce reflects the communities it works alongside. To build a resilient public health workforce made up of individuals from all backgrounds, we must ensure students have the opportunity to receive a world-class public health education regardless of their financial circumstances. We will expand our scholarship offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population and ensure robust support for the success of students from all backgrounds, including first-generation, international and students from low-income families.
