Master of Public Health (MPH)

The 60 credit-hour, two-year Master of Public Health (MPH) professional degree is aimed at students who plan to pursue careers as practitioners and leaders working to protect the public and the environment from the effects of hazardous occupational and environmental exposures. The defining feature of the MPH degree is the summer internship, typically in private industry, a governmental agency, or a community organization in the U.S. or abroad. 

Degree Options

The Environmental Health Promotion and Policy MPH program will provide students with the public health background and skills to evaluate environmental and occupational health risks and develop solutions based on health promotion and policy tools to reduce such risks.

Graduates of the Environmental Health Promotion and Policy program will work in government agencies, non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, and industry to meet present and future needs for environmental health policy and promotion efforts necessary to improve public health by mitigating hazard exposure in communities and workplaces. There is a growing need for individuals with the skill set provided by this degree given the increasing number and complexity of environmental health hazards facing people in the US and across the globe.

The Environmental Health Sciences MPH provides a broad foundation in environmental and occupational health  skills to evaluate environmental and occupational health risks and develop solutions based on environmental health science while also allowing you to specialize in a focus area as listed below:

The Environmental Health Sciences MPH degree program also offers a formalized concentration in Industrial Hygiene.

Graduates of the Environmental Health Sciences MPH program respond to the growing need for qualified professionals in both public and private sectors who have expertise in environmental and occupational health.  When working in an environmental and occupational health field, you will be immersed in a perspective of how environment and actions heavily affect our daily health.  These individuals find employment in a wide range of fields, including government (local, state and federal) ; industry (consulting and industry);  the non-profit/non-government sector (community organizations, foundations and international programs), and academia for research and teaching.

Master of Science (MS)

The two-year Master of Science (MS) program is a four semester program aimed at students who plan to pursue scientific research rather than directed toward professional practice. It is a natural starting point for students interested in pursuing a PhD degree in public health or a related field, or a career in research. The emphasis is on building a strong foundation in environmental health sciences, along with research methods in a specialty field. MS students are required to complete a program of didactic coursework and to undertake original research culminating in a master's thesis.

Concentrations

Research areas of interest include a broad range of environmental and occupational areas. Many topics include aspects of Environment, Sustainability, and Heath and Occupational Health Sciences-Industrial Hygiene. The MS degree also offers a formalized concentration in Industrial Hygiene.

The Accelerated Master's Degree (AMD) program will award a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health Sciences for highly motivated students working towards their Bachelor's degree in their senior year, plus one more year of graduate study in Environmental Health Sciences.

The Toxicology MS degree identifies environmental and therapeutic exposures of concern, reveals mechanisms by which chemical toxicants create pathological dysfunction or disease, identifies interventions for the prevention of adverse effects, conducts safety assessments, and estimates acceptable levels of exposure for the protection of the public health.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree focuses on research and prepares you for a career in university-level teaching and research. A dissertation with original research is part of this degree.

Research areas of interest include a broad range of environmental and occupational areas. Many topics include aspects of Environment, Sustainability, and Heath,  Occupational Health Sciences-Industrial Hygiene and occupational and environmental epidemiology.
