Symposium 2012 Applying Research
Overview
On May 10th, a special dinner was held in honor of Jeff Alexander, Catherine McLaughlin
and Jack Wheeler as they retired as University of Michigan faculty. This special evening
was followed by a daylong symposium celebrating 50 years of excellence in health services
research at the University of Michigan. Presenters offered their perspectives on how
research effectively informs and influences policy and practice.

On May 10th, 2012, a special dinner was held in honor of professors Jeffrey Alexander,
Catherine McLaughlin and Jack Wheeler as they retired from University of Michigan
faculty.
Jeffrey Alexander, Professor Emeritus, previously the Richard Carl Jelinek Professor
of Health Management and Policy. Professor Alexander's research interests focused
on organizational change in the health care sector, multi-institutional systems, governance
and physician participation in institutional management and policy-making.
Catherine McLaughlin, Professor Emeritus of Health Management and Policy. Professor
McLaughlin's research interests focused on health insurance coverage, employer, employee,
and Medicare beneficiary coverage choice, barriers to access, and health information
technology.
Jack Wheeler, Professor Emeritus of Health Management and Policy and Chair from 1991-1997.
Professor Wheeler's research interests focused on optimal investment (capital expenditure)
decisions by the health care firm, optimal financing decisions by the health care
firm, and health care payment policy.
Kyle Grazier, Chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy, welcomed honorees
and guests to an evening in celebration of excellence in research.
Austin Frakt, of Boston University, is a health economist and researcher and the founder
of the health policy blog, The Incidental Economist: Contemplating health care with
a focus on research, an eye on reform.
Helen Levy, of University of Michigan, is a research associate professor and alumna
of the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Scholars program. She previously served as
a senior economist at the President's Council of Economic Advisers.
Alumni, faculty, students and friends gathered for a day-long symposium to share ideas
about applying research to improve the health system: past, present and future.

- Helen Levy, University of Michigan and alumna of the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Scholars
