Ensuring public health works across policy and communities is no small task. With a host of skills honed at Michigan Public Health and beyond, Robin Martz, MPH ’03, serves populations in eastern Africa by understanding the art and science of communication, policy, and a range of other technical areas.
Numbers can help us make sense of our lives, a comforting thing in a world filled with uncertainty. But when faced with harrowing statistics around the pandemic’s toll on human populations, that comfort wanes. Two recent graduates share what they learned when their research became personal.
Generosity can make all the difference. In a year of unprecedented challenges, Michigan Public Health saw a significant increase in the number of smaller donations made to the school. Many of those gifts went to supporting students experiencing critical needs due to the pandemic.
Despite the difficult times, signs of hope have blossomed around the Michigan Public Health community. Students help lead campus sampling efforts, alumni bring all their public health expertise to bear, and the school moves up in national rankings.
The framers of the Affordable Care Act can be proud of many things the act has accomplished, from reducing the number of uninsured to assuring those with preexisting conditions are not excluded from coverage. Perhaps most significantly, the ACA has changed the way we think and the actual conversation we are having about health care coverage and care.
As alum and public health professor Rohan Jeremiah knows well, public health does its best work when it remembers the inherent strengths and unique qualities of the communities it seeks to serve. This means paying close attention to local cultures and thinking creatively about ways to turn challenges into opportunities.
