David Musch, PhD, MPH

David C. Musch, Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences in the
Medical School and professor of epidemiology in the School of Public Health, retired
from active faculty status on May 31, 2024.
Dr. Musch received his B.S. degree in 1976 from Calvin College, his M.P.H. degree in 1978 from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. degree in epidemiologic science in 1981 from the University of Michigan. He joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1981 as research investigator in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Medical School, and advanced through the research faculty track to an appointment as senior research scientist in 1997. In 2003, he was appointed professor with tenure in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, then in 2016, a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health. He also is a faculty associate in Global REACH (since 2012) and a faculty member in the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (since 2013).
Dr. Musch’s research has focused on applying sound clinical research designs and statistical analyses to identify factors associated with improving the detection and treatment of ophthalmic diseases, with a particular emphasis on glaucoma and pediatric eye conditions. He has co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles, served on numerous NIH and international advisory boards, and is a member on three journals’ editorial boards and a peerreviewerVer for multiple scientific journals. His methodologic expertise has led to involvement on many data and safety monitoring boards for multicenter clinical trials of drugs and devices. During his 43-year career at the University of Michigan, he was privileged to serve as a mentor to many residents, fellows, and faculty. His grant support has included roles as principal or coinvestigator on grants from the NIH, CDC, and foundations. Among his honors and awards, Dr. Musch has been recognized as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Epidemiology, and a Gold Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. In 2020, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
