Michael A. Joseph, PhD, MPH

Michael A. Joseph, PhD, MPH is the Vice Dean of Education at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology. He has served as the co-PI on two federally funded grants related to heterosexual Black men's HIV transmission risks. A highly regarded teacher and curricular innovator, Dr. Joseph was recognized with the prestigious SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013. For nearly a decade, he has taught the American Public Health Association Learning Institute Course, “Biostatistics for Non-Statisticians,” which he created to build public health quantitative proficiency for students with varying levels of knowledge, skills, and expertise. Internationally, he has extensive experience in biostatistics and epidemiology capacity building and has conducted training sessions in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Estonia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

Dr. Joseph is deeply committed to developing the next generation of diverse public health professionals. He is the Principal Investigator of the Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) at Mailman and teaches introductory biostatistics across multiple pathway programs designed to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds as they pursue careers in public health and related health professions. His pathway work includes the University of Michigan programs Summer Enrichment Program in Health Equity and Leadership Training in Healthcare and Public Health (SEP-HEALTHSpark) and the Future Public Health Leaders Program (FPHLP), as well as Project IMHOTEP at Morehouse College and the Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) through the Manhattan-Staten Island Area Health Education Center (MSI AHEC). He is known for an intense commitment to student success and has received numerous awards for outstanding mentorship.
