John Z. Ayanian, MD, MPP
- Alice Hamilton Distinguished University Professor of Medicine and Healthcare Policy
Dr. Ayanian's research focuses on access to care, quality of care, and health disparities related to race, ethnicity, gender, insurance coverage, and socioeconomic factors, as well as the effects of patient, physician and organizational characteristics on health services and outcomes of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and kidney disease. Since 2012, he has served as the inaugural Director of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, which includes over 650 faculty members from 15 schools and colleges at the University of Michigan. In 2019 he became the founding Editor in Chief of JAMA Health Forum, a peer-reviewed, open access journal focused on health policy, health care systems, and public health.

Research Projects:
Since 2014, Dr. Ayanian has led a multi-disciplinary team of 15 University of Michigan
faculty members conducting the federally authorized evaluation of the Healthy Michigan
Plan, which has expanded Medicaid coverage to one million low-income adults in Michigan.
